Ingredients
  

Cake Batter

  • 1 cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs room temperature
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour spooned and leveled
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 cup milk room temperature
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with flour. Mix just until combined.
  • Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Divide batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool completely in pans before frosting or serving.

Notes

For variations, add cocoa powder for chocolate cake, lemon zest for brightness, or warm spices for holiday flavor. Avoid overmixing and be sure to let cakes cool fully before frosting.
