Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2.5 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 0.75 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk room temperature

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar with a mixer until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  • Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Alternate adding the flour mixture and milk, beginning and ending with flour. Mix just until combined.
  • Divide batter evenly between pans. Smooth tops with a spatula.
  • Bake 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pans, then transfer to wire racks.

Notes

This cake works beautifully as a base for birthdays, trifles, or layered desserts. It can also be frozen (wrap layers in plastic and foil). For cupcakes, bake 18–20 minutes instead.
